Oral hygiene for orthodontic patient
Due to fashion tendencies modern orthodontic appliances became more refined. Braces not only have no alternative in orthodontic treatment, but also they turned sort of adornment.
Fixation of braces is painless and done without any discomfort. When applying braces the orthodontist will attach small brackets to your teeth with special dental bond agent and then place wires called arch wires through the brackets. The arch wires act as tracks to create the “path of movement” that guides the teeth.
Advantages and duration of treatment with braces
Treatment period is individual as it depends on type of bite irregularity and varies from 6 months upto 2 years. A patient visits a doctor once a month. To maintain tooth positions after treatment a retainer is applied. A retainer is a thin wire which is fixed onto the front six teeth from inside and isn’t visible.
Braces have a list of preferences:
- No discomfort when speaking;
- Result achieved in a short time;
- Correction of all types of irregularities;
- Adult application;
- Invisibility;
- Trendyness;
If a patient has irregular teeth, bad bite and not nice alignment there is a risk of:
- teeth wear;
- temporomandibular disorders (inflammation, pain, clicking noise when speaking, chewing);
- caries and a high risk of its complication;
Irregular alignment of teeth often prevents from applying dentures in future. It is notable that 40% of the orthodontic patients are adults.
Teeth correction with removable plates
This kind of treatment is recommended in early age. Removable plate is made of a plastic base and wire clips and springs. Teeth correction with removable plates is very important in early age as jaw formation isn’t completed and result is easier to achieve. Treatment period varies from 1.5 to 2 years.
Oral hygiene for orthodontic patient
People undergoing orthodontic treatment need to be even more dedicated to good oral hygiene. Brush at least three times a day with special bristles. It is best to brush after meals to make sure there’s no food trapped in or around braces. Floss is very useful for this purpose as well. While wearing braces eating hard food and chewing gums isn’t recommended.
